Anyone who’s familiar with me knows that I love to hunt. Hunting is such a diverse topic and there are many different types of hunting. The best places to hunt really depend on what you’re looking to do—whether it’s bird hunting, big game hunting, or even small game hunting. There’s also the consideration of hunting equipment and how you want to hunt. With that in mind, here’s my opinion on the best places.
Out west is more big game hunting along with spot and stalk hunting. Instead of just sitting in a tree or standing around and waiting for whatever you’re hunting to come by, you actively spot and stalk the animal. The most popular states are Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and even some parts of Kansas.
While looking for a good place to hunt, you’ll also want to consider the animal density. I’m a big believer in conservation, and hunters are really conservationists by practice. We make sure we’re taking part in our responsibility to manage the wild animal population so that it doesn’t overrun an area. It’s a good starting point for you to look at the number of animals per square mile. (Most state wildlife agencies make that information publicly available.)
Depending on the location, there are also different regulations and application processes to even obtain the tag to hunt a certain animal. Before you pick a place to go hunting, you’ll definitely want to figure out whether the rules/regulations fit your plans. Some states (like Wyoming) use a point system and it might even take up to 20 years to obtain the tag to hunt a specific animal species.
