Many people prefer to drink the water that comes from their refrigerator filter instead of their tap water. Even so, there are many options out there (such as a home water treatment system) that may be an even better option. Letโs investigate the different kinds of water filtration that are available, and the benefits of each one.
Refrigerator water dispensers have carbon filters in them. Carbon filtration will remove chorine from water, which is a great feature since most of us would rather drink water thatโs chlorine-free. Additionally, carbon polishes the water, which is another way of saying that it makes the water taste better. Finally, carbon filters also remove minor unpleasant odors from the water.
Carbon filters, unfortunately, will not take bad water and make it end up tasting great. Carbon is a polisher, or a fine filtration. It does not filter particles, sediment, hardness, or iron, and it does not address pH issues. For those reasons, carbon filters are relatively expensive for what they actually do.
In fact, if you have very poor water quality, using a refrigerator filter will actually create more problems than it solves. Youโll have to change the filter much more frequently, and it will not really give you good tasting, good smelling water that you would enjoy if iron, hardness, and pH issues were addressed. Ultimately, carbon filters turn already good water into great water.
If the water isnโt already of good quality, there has to be an interim step to clean the water so that a polishing filter (like a refrigerator filter or reverse osmosis system) can refine the water and make it great. Thatโs where a whole house filter comes inโit can handle large volumes of water and it can improve the water to a level of acceptance so that the refrigerator filter can subsequently make the drinking water great.

Many people donโt know whatโs actually in the water they drink every single day. Once they find out, theyโre usually highly motivated to take care of the problem. Maybe youโve gotten used to drinking water with a certain taste to it. Once you have a water filter that produces great drinking water for you and your family, youโll wonder how you did without it for so long.
