Common Water Issues

In past blog posts, we’ve discussed various water treatment systems for your home. This time, let’s talk about three common issues people have with their water, and how a water treatment system can be beneficial. 

Iron

One of the most common water issues in the Franklin County area is iron. Iron is a very ugly and nasty issue to deal with in the home—it leaves red stains on fixtures, in toilets, and it can even turn white laundry a dingy reddish color over time.  It can be very difficult to clean from these fixtures and toilets, which is why a Water Treatment System can remove the iron before it gets in your water.

Hardness

Hard water leaves a white residue that builds up on shower heads, shower doors, and clear glass of any sort after being exposed to water from the faucet. If you run dishes through the dishwasher and have problems with spotting, that’s typically an indication of water hardness. This is a very common issue in the Roanoke counties. You don’t have to put up with it—a water treatment system will remove hardness and make cleaning much easier.

Low pH

pH is a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being balanced. Anything below 7 means that the water is too acidic, and anything above 7 means the water is alkaline. Acidic water is corrosive, having the potential to break down copper plumbing pipes. As the copper breaks down, you’ll notice greenish-blue stains on fixtures such as the shower head. These stains are extremely stubborn and hard to remove.

If you’ve ever had copper gutters or copper roofing on your home’s exterior, you may notice it becoming tarnished over the years and obtaining a green hue. That’s because acid rain has caused it to gradually corrode. The exact same thing happens to your plumbing system, but the stains end up on your fixtures and tub.

Aside from iron, hardness, and low pH, there are also smaller issues homeowners can face such as bacteria or sulfur odor. Water treatment systems can effectively kill bacteria using UV light. We have water treatment systems with different parameters, depending on the severity of the home’s water issues. It all begins with an in-home water test to find out what (if anything) is in the water.
