I’ve noticed a few big recurring misconceptions when it comes to the trades. (I’m a little self-conscious about this subject because I think the trades have an un-deserved negative connotation.) People outside of trades, teachers, professors, and high school students may think about it as a second-rate job but it’s really not. I always tell everyone that college and white collar work isn’t for everyone, and blue collar work is definitely something that should at least be an option to choose from.
Another misconception is the idea that going into the trades is not a good financial decision. The trades can actually be very rewarding financially. In fact there are tradespeople who make well into the six-figures. It’s no different than being a doctor or a nurse who’s involved in a skilled trade, except for the difference in college/training requirements. Once you have a trade, it can pay very well.
I also think it’s misleading for people to think that it’s just a plumbing pipe, water heater, or a wire that you’re dealing with, so how hard can it be really? I’m often reminded of the importance of the work that we do. Here at Wisler Plumbing & Air, we go into people’s homes, where they desire to feel the safest. We often work around elderly parents and/or children, too, which is a clear reminder of the importance of the environment we work in. We also regularly handle items like electrical equipment, which could potentially pose a fire hazard; LP (liquid propane) or natural gas, which can be a silent killer; and sewage, which is disease-ridden. These are very, very important items that can cause serious safety issues if not handled properly. This duty should not be taken lightly and requires someone highly competent and properly trained to make sure everyone’s homes and families stay safe.
In the face of economic instability over the past year, the trades have remained steady. If anything, they’ve probably even flourished more because people were staying and cooking/eating at home while not traveling or going to hotels. A home’s plumbing, electrical, and HVAC is even more important now, and there’s a tremendous amount of stability in the trades as far as job security is concerned.
