Plumbing is different from other trades in the sense that it is very diverse. There are many different types/brands of products and different types of equipment that are used. In some other industries, the products and equipment are much more universal. Due to this fact, plumbing requires extensive knowledge about different components and products. Take pipes, for instance—there are pipes that were used 50 years ago that aren’t used today, and there are pipes that are only 15 years old that are no longer manufactured. The same thing applies to plumbing fixtures, equipment, and water heaters.
Plumbing technology is continuously changing and requires that you maintain a diverse set of knowledge. A lot of people really like this kind of diversity and the challenge that goes along with it. They enjoy the plumbing trade simply because things change each and every day. There are different types of plumbing that someone might be interested in pursuing: residential and commercial, new construction, and service work. I would encourage anyone interested in the trade to pick the area that they feel most interested and then specialize in it. Because plumbing is such a diverse trade, it would be pretty challenging to be great at all of those areas.
The team at Wisler Plumbing and Air specializes in residential work on newer and older homes. (We do not do any type of new construction, commercial, or industrial plumbing.)
