What Every Homeowner Should Do as Spring Approaches

During the wintertime while we were bundled up indoors, something might have broken outside without us realizing it. Now that the warmer spring weather is approaching, here are a few things that every homeowner can do to make sure everything is in working order.

One of the first things you can do is check your hose faucets. I would advise you to turn them on and look to see if there are any leaks inside, especially at the part where they extend out from the wall. They could have frozen during the cold weather and you wouldnโ€™t notice until the next time you really needed to use the hose faucet. This is why itโ€™s probably a good idea to check them proactively.

The next thing to look for is any accumulation of leaves from last fall. (Itโ€™s very hard to gather all the leaves, especially if it gets cold earlier in the year.) We often get a lot of rain in our area during the springtime, which can lead to damage if the gutters arenโ€™t carrying water away from the home. So once spring arrives, make sure that the gutters are clear of any leaves and debris. Leaves also tend to build up around the outside vents along the bottom of the home. Whether they are gas exhaust vents or air intake vents, any stoppages can lead to problems with indoor appliances.

Youโ€™ll also want to make sure the crawlspace vents are still tight and in good working order. They should have been closed during the winter to prevent any freezing, and once spring arrives you can open them back up. One of the things I noticed at my own home is that if you donโ€™t mulch, youโ€™ll have a whole lot of weeds. By getting the mulching done sooner rather than later, youโ€™ll drastically cut down on the amount of weeds in your flowerbeds.
