Thanksgiving Plumbing Woes: How to Avoid a Holiday Headache

How to Avoid a Holiday Headache

It is a well-known fact in the plumbing world that the day after Thanksgiving or Black Friday is one of the busiest days of the year for that industry. But the reason for the increase in activity is not what you think. Of course, most of the thoughts are aimed squarely at people who overuse their toilets because they overused them on Thanksgiving.

The most common reason people call plumbing service on Black Friday is a clogged sink or broken trash can. Yes! With all the cooking and prepping, people often rush the cleaning process and throw things in the sink that they shouldn’t.

How to Avoid needing a Plumber on Black Friday

As much as we love the emergency plumbing business, there are simple steps you can take to avoid a holiday emergency. Try taking these simple precautions this Thanksgiving to avoid clogging your sink or breaking your garbage disposal.

Clean out your Garbage Disposal before the Holiday

This is something you should be doing regularly anyway. So why not add this step to your holiday preparation list? Check out our latest blog to learn how to clean your trash can safely.

Be mindful of what you put down the Drains

Regardless of whether you have a trash can or not, there are certain foods that you should never throw down the kitchen drain. These items include fats, cooking oils, fibrous wastes, bones, potato peelings, poultry skin, fruit, celery and fat. Throw these items and anything else you might ask into the trash instead of the sink. It is best to diffuse out of great caution!

Run the Garbage Disposal periodically

Instead of waiting until the container is full, run it regularly so that too much food does not build up and cause a clog. Also, make sure the water is running while you are operating your disposal.

Give your Pipes a Break

If you’re entertaining guests during the holiday season, your home may have to deal with a significant increase in showers, flushing toilets, laundry, etc. Make sure you take short breaks between showering, doing laundry, and going to the bathroom to avoid overloading your pipes.

Add Signage in your Businessโ€™s Bathrooms

In addition to the domestic problems caused by this holiday, Black Friday has inundated many businesses with a significant increase in their store volume. For commercial properties, be sure to post signs in your bathrooms reminding people not to throw away anything unusual and to be respectful of your space.
