How to Select a New Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals arenโ€™t something we shop for every day. Hereโ€™s what you should consider to make an informed decision.

ย You should start by asking yourself what you plan to use the garbage disposal for and how often you plan to use it. If itโ€™s going to be used every day, Iโ€™d recommend buying a good garbage disposal that has high horsepower, stainless steel construction, and a long warranty. If youโ€™re not going to use it very much, then you might not need to get something thatโ€™s top-of-the-line in those areas.

Stainless Steel Construction

ย Stainless steel construction on a garbage disposal is important because we often put acidic/corrosive products like cleaners and dish soaps down the drain. Galvanized steel will become corroded very quickly if itโ€™s exposed to these types of products. Corrosion simply wonโ€™t occur if the disposal is made from stainless steel.

ย Horsepower

ย Garbage disposals are made with 1/3 horsepower, 1/2 horsepower, 3/4 horsepower, and 1 horsepower in a residential line. Iโ€™d recommend nothing less than a 1 horsepower garbage disposal if itโ€™s going to be used multiple times every day. You want to make sure that you have enough power to grind material very finely. That way, it can go down the drain without any problems. If the garbage disposal is only going to be used once or twice a week, 3/4 horsepower or 1/2 horsepower might be enough.

Warranty

ย All garbage disposals have a warranty, but they will vary depending on the horsepower, construction, and brand. If youโ€™re going to be using the garbage disposal often, make sure that the warranty is as good as possible. (Our 1 horsepower disposals have a lifetime warranty.)
