Do We Really Need Water Filtration Systems?

Do we really need a water filtration system, or is it just a luxury item? I think this is a question that’s very relevant to our area simply because we’re not really plagued with horrible water for the most part. Of course, that’s not a blanket statement for everyone—it mainly applies to Roanoke municipal water. There are some pockets in our communities that use well water with high levels of iron and sulfur.

The municipal water supply in our area is around 10 grain per gallon, which is considered hard water. That means we’re able to tolerate it to the point where it’s just a little bit of a nuisance. So is it really worth putting in a system to deal with the issue? Do you actually need one? I will always answer by saying this: if you haven’t ever had one and you haven’t experienced the difference, you should probably give it a try. The bottom line is, the return on investment is definitely there. You’re not going to waste money by putting in a system, and you’re going to see the benefits of it in the long run.

It’s easy to put it on the back burner simply because you don’t immediately see how it’s harming your plumbing system. One important thing to consider is, even though you may not have that much hardness, over time that hardness will build up in your water heater and cause it to fail prematurely. A water softener or water treatment system is actually one of the highest returns on investment that you can install in your plumbing system. Give it a try, because you have zero risk in doing so. In fact, we typically see payback within 3 to 4 years where you recoup the cost of the investment. (That’s really good from a monetary perspective, but it also makes a great deal of difference in your plumbing system, too.)

The benefits of treated water are definitely going to outshine any small nuisances. What are the benefits? To list a few, you’ll have cleaner dishes without as many spots after they go through the dishwasher. You’ll also experience more efficiency with your heating appliances (like coffee makers, water heaters, or anything else that heats up water). Your items will stay cleaner and last longer. That means reduced soap usage and saved money. It’s much easier on all your plumbing fixtures, so you’ll see reduced breakdowns.

There are significant benefits to owning a water softener or water treatment system. We always promote good water quality for these reasons. If you’ve never owned a water filtration system in your home, contact us online or give us a call at 540-483-9382. We can help you select your best options.
