If I were going to leave behind a message for my children, a few things come to mind. First and foremost, as a Christian parent, I want to make sure that I pass my faith on to my children. It has been real and true for me to know that Jesus is Lord, and that’s very important to me.
Moving on from that, I remember when someone asked me, “When you shake a Dr. Pepper, what comes out?” The obvious answer is, Dr. Pepper. I think people are just like the drink in that question. When individuals get shaken up, their true selves come out. I want to pass on to my children the idea that what we think inside of our minds will naturally come to the forefront. What we end up speaking, how we act, and what we do are really guided by our hearts, so what’s on the inside is really, really important.
I think about how important discipline, diligence, and resiliency are in my life. We can have discipline in tons of areas, whether it be our faith, our family, or even exercise or work life. Just staying busy and not becoming apathetic are attached to diligence. Life is hard, and there’s a lot of adversity that comes our way. It feels like the more responsibility we get, and the older we get, the more we’re accosted by adversity. One of the things I’ve had to learn is to try to be very resilient. I think people are naturally resilient as long as we just give ourselves a chance. (I’m always amazed at how resilient we really are. This past year has definitely demonstrated that reality to us all.) We don’t give ourselves enough credit, that’s for sure. We can overcome so many things, but we just need to have faith that we can overcome our situation. I believe we need to meet adversity with courage and be a resilient person.
I also believe in the principle that you reap what you sow. You’ll get out of anything what you put into it, which ties back into discipline, diligence, and resiliency. I often think about how something might feel right in the moment, but it may not be the right thing when it comes to the future. We try to live that principle at Wisler Plumbing & Air, too, with things like the satisfaction guarantee we give to customers. Sometimes it takes a loss in the short term to make our customers happy in the long term. It might not be fun to take a loss on a situation, but having the discipline to do the right thing is key.
