Looking Back At Christmas 2017

This past Christmas, I took away something significant: everyone needs to become a child during this time because it’s so much fun. Children are full of energy and are just on an absolute high. (I wish I could take a break from work just like they get time off from school, but that’s probably not going to happen.) Kids have tons of anticipation leading up to the holidays, and both my two-year-old and five-year-old were very excited.

We typically go to church the weekend before Christmas, and my kids have outfits for the occasion. My daughter was delighted to wear one of her first ‘spin dresses’, as she called it. She’d spin around several times while the dress fluttered around, and she’d get smacked in the face more than once in the process.

My wife also hung some stockings on our fireplace. They were really just there for decoration because the hooks she used wouldn’t support much weight. As Christmas arrived, the kids did end up getting stockings filled with some goodies. I asked my daughter, “What’s in the stockings?”

She looked back at me intently and said, innocently as can be, “Paper towels!” Of course, she said that because the decoration stockings were stuffed with paper towels to make them look more full.

Our Christmas was spread out with a lot of different family activities, spanning from the weekend before Christmas throughout the beginning of the new year. During our New Year get together, I overheard my two-year-old having a discussion with someone else about Christmas. She said, “Christmas is coming in two days.” She had gotten to the point where every couple of days we’d have another family get together, and she figured that’s what Christmas was about. It was just a time when you’d get together and have fun. That left me thinking, wouldn’t it be great if we could try to capture the magical feeling kids get during Christmas and experience it all throughout the year?
